TROPICAL NORTH QUEENSLAND BED and BREAKFAST

TROPICAL is an adjective meaning of, indigenous to, or characteristic of the Tropics. It also means hot and humid, sultry or torrid. The Tropics refer to the tropic of Cancer and tropic of Capricorn. The former is the parallel latitude 23 degrees and 30 minutes north of the equator, the northerly most point at which the sun reaches an altitude of 90 degrees. And the latter is the southerly equivalent. This part of Tropical North Queensland is known as the Wet Tropics - hence the abundance of rainforest. The origin of the word comes from the Middle English tropik, from Late Latin tropicus and Greek tropikos.
NORTH has lots of meanings. It is the cardinal point on a compass located at zero degrees.
North can refer to any area or region of a country that lies in that direction (if you see what I mean). In England I suppose it means anywhere north of the Humber, although Londoners would probably mean anywhere north of Watford. In Australia, no-one really uses the term the north. Certainly in Queensland we have Tropical North Queensland, and Far North Queensland and even Tropical Far North Queensland.
In games such as bridge or mah-jong, a player sitting opposite South is called North.
QUEENSLAND is the second largest state in Oz. The first settlement in 1824 was a penal colony. Brisbane is the capital, and there seems to be a running battle between Cairns and Townsville as to which city is the capital of Tropical North Queensland.
BED and BREAKFAST I think I have gone into great detail about bed and breakfast on the Breakfast page.
