Is it an owl with a dunce's cap ?

Rainforest Walk - Licuala Lodge

One of several Rainforest Walks in Mission Beach

The Licuala Lodge Rainforest Walk was completed in June 2007. The number of creatures to be found on the original walk was 24. There were numerous attempts made to spot all the creatures before the first successful expedition by a Norwegian couple, Otto and Ashild from Tromso, somewhere in the Arctic Circle. They obviously followed in the great tradition of Norwegian explorers (such as Fridtjof Nansen and Roald Amundsen). However their expedition did take place over 4 days at the end of July 2007. But despite the prolonged search, they were determined to succeed, so first place goes to them.

The first to complete the search in one single day were Dave and Sandra from Surbiton in the UK. Armed with a mobile phone (they took photos of all the creatures to prove that they found them all - how sad is that !!), they completed the search on 2nd August 2007 in a time of 30 minutes. Dave is ultra-competitive, and if his time is beaten I'm sure he will be devastated enough to sink a few pints in his local.

Neil, Wendy and Helen completed the course in 25 minutes to prove that 3 heads are better than two. The same time was also achieved by Feli, Olivia, Cecilia and Valerie - four very charming and very beautiful young ladies

The two creatures that are the hardest to find are the Owl and the Giant Fly.

Printed sheets of the walk are always available at our reception desk on the breakfast verandah.

August 2007 - A Blue Fish was added to the list of creatures (courtesy of Otto and Ashild), making the total 25.

September 2007 - A Santa, Rhinoceros, Tiger and a Giraffe were added to the Rainforest walk ( thanks to Nikolas and Dominique ), bringing the total to 29 animals on the walk.

December 2007 - Several more creatures added (including a gorilla and a shrunken head) bringing the total to 37.

Below is the Hall of Fame of all the successful explorers. The thousands that have tried and failed are not mentioned here - incompetence and anonymity are worthy allies.

July 2007 4 Days Otto and Ashild from the Arctic Circle
Aug 2007 30 mins Dave and Sandra - Surbiton, UK
Aug 2007 30 mins Ramon and Mareille - Boxtel, Netherlands   Also took photos to prove that they found everything. Go PSV !!!
Aug 2007

30 mins

Dominic and Bianca - Shepton Mallet, UK We knew Bianca found the spiders because the whole street could hear her screams
Sep 2007 35 mins

Nikolas ( aged 11 ) and Dominique ( aged 10) - Hobart, TAS Found most of the creatures but had a little help from their parents (Heather and David).

Sep 2007 25 mins Neil and Wendy from Townsville and Helen from Harrogate. A new world record, but there were three of them. Took photos of all the animals.
Oct 2007 60 mins Denise and Bardon from Magnetic Island. Perseverance finally paid off for them. The giant fly was their nemesis.
Dec 2007 2 days Serina and Ellie from Cairns. Took them a long time to find the owl, but they were determined.
Dec 2007 23 hours Emma from Nottingham. Dogged perseverance paid off in the end. Found everything on her own, despite a morbid fear of spiders
July 2008 25 mins Feli (10), Cecilia (12), Valerie (14) - all from Germany, and Olivia (11 - aka the Pancake Queen) from Melbourne. Had a little bit of help from their father Rainer
July 2008 55 mins Uli and Jonas from Munich. Both took photos of all the creatures - but only Jonas managed to photograph the Giant Fly.
